Career
De Lancie played Q in Star Trek: The Next Generation (1987–1994), as well as episodes of various succeeding programs set during that period. His wild, naughty demeanor stands out. He is one of the franchise’s few characters who appear in numerous series: Eight episodes of Star Trek: The Next Generation (“Encounter at Farpoint,” “Hide and Q,” “Q Who,” “Deja Q,” “Qpid,” “True Q,” “Tapestry,” “All Good Things…”), one episode of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (“Q-Less”), three episodes of Star Trek: Voyager (“Death Wish,” “The Q and the Grey,” “Q2”), and one episode of Star Trek: Lower Decks (“Encounter at Farpoint,” “Veritas”) Keegan de Lancie, who is the son of De Lancie, played Q Junior with his father in an episode of Star Trek: Voyager called “Q2.”
Initially, de Lancie was too preoccupied to audition for the role of Q. Still, Gene Roddenberry (who he did not know) organized a second audition. De Lancie noted that, while being a small part of his career, Star Trek opened possibilities for him. In a 2012 interview, de Lancie reported that after his first audition for Q, Roddenberry approached him, stroked his shoulder, and remarked, “You make my work seem better than it is.” In April 2021, it was revealed that John de Lancie would play as Q in the second season of Star Trek: Picard.
