John Gretton Willink Jr., well known as Jocko Willink, is an American retired United States Navy officer, author, and podcaster. He served in the Navy SEALs and is a former member of the SEAL TEAM 3. Jocko Willink was born John Gretton Willink Jr. to his parents on September 8, 1971, in Torrington, Connecticut, United States. Career
Military career
Willink joined the US Navy at 19 because he had always desired to serve in the armed forces. He reported to Naval Amphibious Base Coronado for Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL training (BUD/S) following Navy recruit training and Radioman (RM) “A” School training. Willink completed class 177 of BUD/S. After completing the six-month probationary period and SEAL tactical training (STT), he was awarded the NEC 5326, designating him as a combatant swimmer (SEAL) and granting him the right to don the SEAL insignia.
As an enlisted member of SEAL Teams One and Two, Willink served eight years as an active-duty member of the Navy SEAL. Willink was a member of the SEAL crew who captured the Russian tanker Volga-Neft-147 in the Gulf of Oman when it was transporting oil from Iraq against a UN economic embargo. Willink completed Officer Candidate School to obtain his commission and worked as a platoon leader.
Willink has served several times in Asia, the Middle East, and Europe. He deployed with SEAL Team Three to the Iraqi city of Ramadi in 2006 as the commander of Task Unit Bruiser during Operation Iraqi Freedom. The unit’s members included Leif Babin, Tony Eafrati, Jason Hogan, Michael Monsoor, Marc Alan Lee, Mike Monsoor, Kevin Lacz, Ryan “Biggles” Job, JP Dinnell, and Chris Kyle. During his service, Willink also worked as a Navy SEAL instructor. After 20 years of service, he retired in October 2010.
Post-Military Career
Willink and his SEAL Teammate, Leif Babin, co-founded the leadership consulting firm Echelon Front after Willink retired from the Navy. Along with Babin, he co-wrote Extreme Ownership: How U.S. Navy Seals Lead and Win, a textbook on leadership. Willink launched his weekly podcast, The Jocko Podcast, after appearing on the podcasts of Tim Ferriss, Joe Rogan, and Sam Harris to promote his book.
He then launched The Jocko Podcast, a weekly podcast of his own. On December 28, 2015, he launched his podcast and accompanying website on YouTube.There are currently 1.8 million subscribers to his YouTube account. Willink is a consultant and author and teaches jiu-jitsu at Victory MMA & Fitness in San Diego.
He also co-owns Origin USA, a Farmington, Maine-based business that makes fitness equipment, nutrition supplements, and lifestyle apparel. Origin USA is also one of the few companies in the country that makes jiu-jitsu gis. Willink has a chapter advising Tim Ferriss’ book Tools of Titans.
