Career
Hackett made her television debut in 1959 as Gail Prentiss in Young Doctor Malone. For her Off-Broadway portrayal of Chris in Michael Shurtleff’s production Call Me By My Rightful Name, she received an Obie Award for Best Actress, a Theatre World Award, and a Drama Desk Award in 1961.
Hackett appeared in the CBS court drama The Defenders (1961–1965) as Robert Reed (Kenneth Preston’s fiancée), a partner in the father-and-son law practice founded by patriarch Lawrence Preston (E.G., Marshall). She appeared in scenes with both principal actors frequently. Hackett played the lead in The Twilight Zone episode “A Piano in the House.” She appeared as a guest star on Channing, an ABC drama about college life starring Jason Evers and Henry Jones, during the 1963–1964 season.
Hackett appeared in Sidney Lumet’s 1966 picture The Group alongside Candice Bergen, Larry Hagman, Richard Mulligan, Joanna Pettet, and others. In the 1968 Western Will Penny, she played Catherine Allen, a young mother battling to survive on the frontier, with Charlton Heston in the titular role. Hackett also appeared with James Garner in the classic Western comedy Support Your Local Sheriff! and in the 1973 murder mystery The Last of Sheila.
