Radio Career
While still in high school, Kimmel started working at a radio station, inspired by David Letterman’s early career in the medium. He persisted through college and eventually secured his first paid radio position as a morning co-host on Seattle’s KZOK-FM’s The Me and Him Show. Jimmy and his co-host, Kent Voss, were let go primarily because of the expensive antics they would pull off live.
After deciding to launch his program in Palm Springs, California, Kimmel hired Carson Daly, a buddy from his youth, to work as his intern. Eventually, Jimmy found himself at Los Angeles’ KROQ-FM, where he performed for five years as “Jimmy the Sports Guy” on the morning program with Kevin and Bean.
Comedy Central Career
At first, Kimmel had no desire to work on television. After starting to write promos for Fox broadcasters, he was chosen to do the on-air advertising himself. In 1997, Kimmel was then allowed to appear on Comedy Central’s Win Ben Stein’s Money as Ben Stein’s “funny everyman” comic counterpart. The pair took home the Best Game Show Host Emmy.
In 1999, Kimmel co-hosted and co-produced The Man Show with Adam Carolla while working on Win Ben Stein’s Money. Because of the show’s popularity, Kimmel and Carolla were able to develop Crank Yankers, a Comedy Central series in which Kimmel also provided the voices of other characters.
