Chelsea’s defeat to Arsenal on Sunday at Stamford Bridge was the first Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang faced Arsenal since leaving the club in January 2021.
The Gabonese international failed to make an impact in the London derby as Chelsea were defeated by Arsenal. The 33-year-old was sub-off in the second half.
However, former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink believes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was let down by his teammate due to a lack of supplies.
What did Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink?
The former Dutch international said on Premier League production: We were talking about Aubameyang’s having only scored one goal [in the league] so far.
“But he [did] everything right [in the game against Arsenal]. He was in the middle of the goal, he stopped and checked.
“He only needed that yard, that yard that [Manchester City’s Erling] Haaland gets.
“But his [Haaland] teammates find him, and he just has to find the corner [of the goal].
“That’s the difference.”
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has scored 3 goals in 12 appearances for Chelsea.
Hasselbaink also added that individual errors caused Chelsea’s defeat against Arsenal.
He added: “Just an individual error. Just silly But overall Arsenal were so much better. Energy levels were not right. There were no forward advances for Chelsea.
“Arsenal deserves to win as much as it hurts me to say. They deserve to win. They’re playing very good football.
“And for Chelsea, they found themselves in a very difficult time at the moment.”
Meanwhile, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards have slammed Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella over involvement in Arsenal’s goal against Chelsea.
The all-time Premier League goalscorer said: “It’s embarrassing from a Chelsea point of view.
“So many players could have cleared it, whether it’s [Kai] Havertz or [Thiago] Silva. The keeper [Edouard Mendy] isn’t given a chance. It wasn’t even a great ball in.
“Look at Cucurella in there with Xhaka. He doesn’t move at all. He just holds Xhaka, there’s nothing at all from him!”
Manchester City Icon Micah Richards added: ‘It says, “my man is not going to score”, but he’s taken that literally!
“All he has to do is move an inch to the left and he can clear it! I don’t understand what he was thinking there at all.”
On Chelsea the performance of Chelsea attackers, Alan Shearer added: “They could still be there now and they still wouldn’t have scored such was their lack of quality in the final third.
“They got into one or two decent positions, not many, but when they did their final ball was terrible.’
“Havertz takes way too many touches when he gets to the box, it was far too easy for Arsenal to get men back behind the ball. Today they had no chance of scoring.”
Chelsea will face Manchester City at the Etihad on Wednesday in EFL Cup round 16.
