Early Life & Career
Jay started surfing at nine and rode his first waves at Sewer Peak. He was known as a versatile surfer who enjoyed all aspects of surfing and was not limited to a shortboard or a longboard. This admiration sprang from a general love of the sea, as seen by his successes as a swimmer, paddler, diver, and fisherman. After achieving success as a child, he grew increasingly interested in surfing Mavericks north of Santa Cruz at Half Moon Bay.
Jay began surfing Mavericks at 15 after hard physical and mental training with his instructor, close friend, and Mavericks regular Frosty Hesson and quickly became a respected regular in the line-up. Moriarity and Chris Gallagher co-authored The Ultimate Guide to Surfing in 2001. Curtis Hanson’s film Chasing Mavericks, which depicts Moriarity’s life and stars Jonny Weston as Moriarity, was released on October 26, 2012.

Personal Details & Death
Moriarity drowned a day before his 23rd birthday in the Indian Ocean off the shore of the Maldives’ island Lohifushi on Friday, June 15, 2001. Moriarity was at Lohifushi for a picture shoot with O’Neill when he went freediving and was never seen again. A search party discovered his body late Friday night.
