Manchester City signed Erling Haaland for £51 millions from Borussia Dortmund. The Norwegian international spend two years at Dortmund scoring 86 goals in 89 appearances.
Pep Guardiola’s side has been playing without a striker for two seasons, winning back-to-back Premier League.
However, Jamie Carragher believes Erling Haaland will not have much influence on Manchester City’s chance of winning the Premier League as the Citizens have been dominating the Premier League without him but expect the Norwegian international to be the final piece of the jigsaw for Manchester City in their quest to win the Champions League.
What did Jamie Carragher say?
In an interview with talk sports, the former Liverpool legend said when asked if the signing of Erling Haaland will make the Premier League easy for Manchester City to win: “No, I don’t think so.
“I still think City are favorites, but I don’t think Haaland is a game changer for them in terms of winning the league.
“They win the league now and they already get 95 to 100 points – are they going to get 110?! There are only so many points you can win in a season.
“I think Haaland is almost the icing on the cake for the Champions League. If he’s playing away in Madrid, they don’t lose that game. I think that’s the difference he’ll make.
“I don’t think it’ll make a huge difference to the league because City is that good anyway.
“I think when you look at what Liverpool did to City and get to that level of 90-plus points, they bought Allison and van Dijk. They were game changers.
“They took Liverpool from a team who were getting 75 points, to a team looking to get 95 points.
“I think City is already at that level, so I don’t think it’s going to be like that for Haaland.
“But you’d think that with a great striker like him and the players he’s got around him, it gives them a great opportunity in the Champions League.”
Erling Haaland scored the only goal in Manchester City’s 1-0 win victory over Bayern Munich, reacting to his first goal former Manchester City defender Chinedum Onuoha said: “It must be such a great feeling for him.
“He knows all eyes are on him – he’s very aware of his presence and how people perceive him.
“A lot of eyes will have tuned in, a big audience – not just because it’s City v Bayern but because it’s City with Haaland v Bayern.
“They’re big talking points, big moments and that’s what people tune in to see, what they want to see.
“For him to have been able to do that in front of nearly 80,000 fans with hundreds of thousands more watching the game, it was a great moment. “You can see the joy it brought to the players – the new signing off the mark. You can’t put a value on that, it’s truly incredible.”
Erling Haaland is expected to make his official debut against Liverpool in the Community Shield on Sunday.
