Recent reports reveal a decline in freshmen enrolment this year compared to last fall. According to a Pew Research Centre poll, more men are opting out of college than women.

However, some in-demand jobs don’t necessarily require a college degree. Here is our list of in-demand careers you don’t need a college degree to pursue.

Airline operation specialist

Airline Operations Specialist plays a vital role in ensuring the smooth and well-organised operation of airline operations. Airlines are seeking people to ensure that commercials have takeoffs and landings.

Airline operation specialists use certain key resources, including applying knowledge of weather information and maintaining flight records.

Prospective applicants need to complete an apprenticeship program in airfield operation or management.

The median wage of an Airline operation Specialist was $51,140 as of May 2023.

Costume attendants

Nowadays, every occasion calls for a special costume. You can tell that the demand for costumes is very high, and so is the demand for costume attendants.

As a costume attendant, your role could be a good fit for people capable of assisting in “selecting, fitting, and taking care of costumes for cast members and entertainers” in performances and plays.

You don’t need a college degree for this job. You might not even have an apprenticeship program, but a good sense of fashion and the ability to follow fashion trends can keep you going.

Most costume attendants gain their skills from high school or college drama, the television or video industry and the performance arts industry.

According to the federal data records, professional attendants earned a median wage of $52,370 last year.

Elevator and escalator installation and repair

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics data, people who can install and repair elevators are in demand. Most of these workers mostly require a license to work.

You don’t need a college degree for this job; however, you need to pass a 4-year apprenticeship program. The training program includes skills like elevator and escalator parts, electrical and digital theory, safety and others.

Employees in this field are often required to “work in cramped areas inside crawl spaces and machine rooms” or at heights in elevator shafts.

As of last year, the median wage of employees in this field was $102,420.

Forest fire inspectors and prevention specialists

People without college degrees can also secure lucrative jobs in Forest fire prevention and inspection. Employees in this field need skills in detecting fire hazards, identifying fire prevention measures and investigating the cause of fires.

Certification may be required. However, employees in this sector mostly acquire their skills on the job. The basic requirement for this job is to be a firefighter.

According to records, forest fire inspectors and prevention specialists earned an average of $71,420 last year.

Subway and streetcar operators

People who can operate subways and trains are in demand in the United States. For those who don’t have the requisite skills, you will need on-the-job training.

According to statistics, the average median wage for Subway and streetcar operators was  $84,270 last year.
