Nothing ruins a hunting trip like frigid feet.

If you want to get out on the land and enjoy yourself, you need to be ready for the elements. That means you have to plan out your outfits to account for the varying temperatures that come your way throughout the day.

We’re going to look at winter hunting gear essentials today, giving you some insight into what you should bring along. Hopefully, the ideas below provide you with functional insights that keep you comfortable while you’re out.

Let’s get started.

Essential Winter Hunting Gear Advice

The first thing to consider is that you will need multiple layers in ascending levels of warmth. Layers produce more insulation that keeps your body heat contained.

Further, layering allows you to remove items and adjust your temperature based on your own preferences. It’s wise to put the warmest layers on the outside of your outfit because warm articles closer to your body might produce too much heat or be difficult to remove when it gets warmer.

All of the items except the boots below should be layered.

Socks, Boots, and Gloves

Your feet and hands are at the top of the list when it comes to cold weather hunting. Appendages are the first things to get frostbite, so we have to look at them first.

Wool socks are some of the best options when it comes to insulation. Invest in a thick pair of wool socks for hunting. Slip a normal pair of long socks on underneath them when you go out as well. Make sure to bring extra pairs of both before you go out in case you get wet.

A solid pair of waterproof boots are essential as well. Make sure that they’re far enough up your leg to prevent any water or snow from entering under normal conditions.

Any good outdoor store should have a wide selection of waterproof boots.

Finally, find a workable pair of gloves. These are functional gloves that give you a lot of dexterity. Use these gloves while you’re in the process of hunting and bring a warm pair of mittens for times when you’re resting.

Pants, Shirts, and Hats

Make sure you’ve got longjohns under your pants. There’s no rule of thumb for hunting longjohns other than the fact that you should always have them on. Jeans or any other pair of pants should work as a second layer.

Wear water-resistant snow pants over your jeans. Those three layers should offer a lot of versatility throughout the day.

When it comes to layering shirts, start with a tight compression shirt. This keeps body heat close and prevents it from leaking out. Over that, scale up to long-sleeve shirts, sweaters, sweatshirts, then jackets.

To top the whole outfit off, make sure that you’ve got a warm beanie to cover your ears and the top of your head. Most of the body heat leaves through the top of your head, so make sure that your beanie is insulated.
