Attics can be tricky spaces. They can let in the cold, they can be a prime target for pests, and they can be a waste of space. That is, of course, if you leave them to their own devices. Your attic doesn’t have to be a problem. Instead, it can be the ultimate boon to help you get the most out of your home. From transforming your attic into a livable space to making it the perfect destination for your long-term storage needs, these are the top ways to get the most out of your attic today.

Check if Your Attic Can Be Made into a Spare Room

There are so many different ways that you can convert your attic space, with the most value-adding approach being to convert it. Converting your attic will typically mean extending the roof or just finishing it so that you have a usable room. This room can become a home office or an extra bedroom.

That is, of course, if there are proper stairs leading up to this space. If you have room for another set of stairs, and your attic is large enough to warrant adding an extra floor, then absolutely invest in this. An extra room always adds to the value and appeal of your home and can also make it easier to live in for the long term, even as your family grows.

Either Way, You’ll Want to Finish it Off

Regardless of whether your attic makes for a good house conversion or not, you are going to want to finish the space. Finishing the space means adding extra insulation to the roof and floor and then putting up drywall to hide it away. This will help keep the space dryer and cleaner, which in turn can help minimize the risk of mold and cold spots in the home. It’s also how you’ll better prevent issues like dry rot or pest infestations, so when your items are put into deep storage, they remain safe. Doing these steps first means you’ll be able to safely and easily access your stored goods.

Use Your Attic for Storage

Using your attic for storage purposes is far from a ground-breaking idea, but the classics are there for a reason. Finishing off your attic and then adding your choice of attic ladders to the space so you can safely enter and exit without taking up floor space from your living quarters is a must. Now you don’t have to live with every single belonging you own and can now store items in the space safely.

Use it to House a Solar System

If you have solar panels on your roof, you’ll also need to add a battery to store that electricity somewhere in your home. The top locations are either your garage or your attic. If your solar panel is being used to help offset your home’s electricity, for example, and not power up your electric car, then you’ll likely be happiest with it in your attic. Putting large systems in your attic can be a great way to maximize space while minimizing the running costs of your property.
