If you are a parent, your child getting injured or hurt is likely one of your worst fears. Unfortunately, children do get hurt and it is a pretty regular thing, in fact. If you do not take the time to learn how to administer first aid to your injured child, then you might not be able to help them in times of hardship. Your child will no doubt look to you when they are injured and if you are unable to help them then they won’t trust you as much in the future.
Here is how to administer first aid to an injured child:
Bandage Tape
If you want to ensure that you are able to look after your child when they get hurt, invest in first aid equipment. One of the most important things for you to invest in is bandage tape. It is important to note that there is a variety of medical tape styles, of which bandage tape is included. There are other types of dressings and wrappings too. Make sure you buy a mix of them. If you are unsure what to buy then rather than buying items individually, buy wrappings and tapes as part of an actual first aid kit.
Taking Training
First aid training is a good idea. There are different types of first aid, from minor to major. Minor ones are easy and do not require a lot of explanation. If you are going to take training then take it for major ones, like CPR. There are lots of online first aid classes you can take. If you would prefer in-person ones, then there should be some for free at your local community college. If you have to pay for a course, make sure you get a certificate at the end of it.
Relaxing Them
If you are having to perform first aid on your child then the chances are that they are going to be very scared. As a parent, you need to do everything you can to allay and satisfy their fears. Relaxing them is something only you will know how to do. Talk to your child gently and tell them that everything is going to be OK. As you are doing this make sure that you are giving them first aid. By distracting them while you are giving them first aid you will make the process much easier and more relaxing for them. If your child is not relaxed it’s going to be very difficult to apply dressings or antiseptics to their wounds.
Child-safe Drugs
You need to make sure that the drugs you were using during first aid are safe for your child to use. Some drugs are not safe for children. For example, it is visible to give a child codeine another prescription strength painkiller after they have been injured, however, paracetamol should be fine. Make sure you give your child drugs that are safe for them to use.
Your child’s safety should be your main concern in life. You can ensure they are safe by learning first aid. That way, if they ever injure themselves you can come to their aid and treat their injuries.
