Sammo’s parents worked as wardrobe artists in the local film industry, so his guardianship was thrust upon his grandparents. His grandparents were actress Chin Tsi-ang and film director Hung Chung-ho. In 1961, at age 9, Sammo enrolled in the China Drama Academy.

During the early 1960s, Sammo Hung made his first film appearance as a child in many films for Cathay Asia and Bo Bo Films. 1961 saw him make his film debut in Education of Love. Sammo appeared alongside Jackie Chan in the 1962 film Big and Little Wong Tin Bar, followed by The Birth of Yue Fei. In 1966, at the age of 14, he began working for Shaw Brothers Studio, helping the action director Han Yingjie on King Hu’s film Come Drink with Me.
