Three were arrested as Houston Police Officer S. Durfee recuperated from the gun wound.
The Houston Police Department said three people had been arrested and charged after they were suspected of burglarizing a house Tuesday morning, binding a mother. Then, one of them allegedly shot an officer.
By the account of an interview with a local KHOU, the homeowner, who is the woman’s father, related how his daughter opened the door to inform the guys they had the wrong address, but after seeing the DoorDash bag, it became a shootout with the police and an armed robbery aftermath.
“Pulled a gun out of a DoorDash bag, he forced entry,” Ben Bates told KHOU. “After my daughter was zip-tied and had her one- and three-year-olds with her, they started to loot the house. She walked them through the rooms looking for items to take, but they didn’t do anything with the children.”
The police arrived at the residence after a neighbour called for assistance. They entered and moved toward two suspects. Raymond Perez, 35, emerged from a back room while suspect Michael Perez, 38, was being subdued and fired a gunshot at Officer S. Durfee’s leg, per the police.
According to the police, Officer Durfee returned fire, not striking anyone; however, Raymond Perez fled out the rear door of the house.
Following the shooting, according to the Houston Police, a third suspect, identified as 18-year-old Brian A. Garcia Chavez, was waiting in a car and fled.
The police reportedly took Raymond Perez into custody about a block away from the house. He was charged with unlawful carry of a weapon, aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon, and aggravated assault on a public servant.
After several hours, police said SWAT team members found and arrested Garcia Chavez. Michael Perez and Garcia Chavez were both charged with aggravated robbery with a deadly weapon.
KHOU reported the mother and children weren’t hurt. Police said Officer Durfee was taken to Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center, where he was released. He is expected to make a complete recovery.
