“This is why you shouldn’t fire a speaker in the middle of the term for no reason.” As a result of the removal of former House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, Lawler said House Republicans are furious. They are worried about what this means for global security, since the U.S.’s best ally in the Middle East is at war with the terrorist group Hamas.
“This is why you shouldn’t fire a Speaker in the middle of the term for no reason.” Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., wrote on X on Saturday, “What an absolute s— show.” In a different post, he said, “Petty politics and personal grudges hurt our country and our government’s stability.” A speaker needs to be chosen.
This past weekend, Hamas militants killed hundreds of Israelis, including soldiers and residents. It was the first time that an attack inside Israel’s borders had ever happened. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu promised to destroy Hamas sites, so Israel used force in the Gaza Strip to keep his word.
“We will destroy every location where Hamas is hiding and operating in that evil city.” Netanhahy warned, “I tell the people of Gaza to leave now, because we will act violently everywhere.”
It brought to light the political crisis in the House of Representatives. Congress is almost paralyzed until the lower house chooses a new leader. Lawmakers are going into uncharted ground; the U.S. Congress had never removed a House speaker before last week.
Patrick McHenry, R-N.C., is the House Financial Services Chairman and acting speaker right now, but it’s still not clear how much power he has. A number of different views say that the role’s only purpose is to make it easier to choose a new speaker.
However, Fox News Digital did not hear back from the White House when they asked if McHenry would be getting a secret report on the situation in Israel. In the same way, McHenry’s office did not answer when asked if he would be briefed.
Usually, the speaker is part of the “Gang of Eight,” which is made up of the eight most powerful lawmakers in Congress. The government keeps this group up to date on secret intelligence issues.
In an interview on Fox News Live on Saturday, McCarthy brought this up. “The House can’t do anything until they choose a speaker.” I am not sure how quickly that takes place. The speaker is part of the Gang of Eight, which does things so that people can get reports and other things. “But think about this: why would you ever get rid of a speaker in the middle of their term to make everyone doubt you?” he asked.
At the moment, House Majority Leader Steve Scalise, R-La., and Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, are both running for the top job. Chairman of the Republican Study Committee Kevin Hern, R-Okla., who recently dropped out of the run, asked the party to work together to get things done quickly.
“Republicans need to show a united front as soon as possible.” “We can’t let chaos and confusion on Capitol Hill be the story. We need strong American leadership, and that won’t happen as long as the Speaker’s chair is empty,” Hern told Fox News Digital.
Rep. Marc Molinaro said that McHenry should be told what’s going on.
“The people of Israel are being scared because they are at war.” We need to help Israel, but we can’t let the confusion in the Capitol stop us. He said online, “There’s no time to waste.” “[McHenry] is now Speaker pro tem.” He needs to be in the room for briefings, and we need to choose a fixed speaker right away.
The Republicans in the House are set to choose a new speaker on Wednesday morning, following a meeting behind closed doors and a candidate discussion earlier in the week.
