Roe v. Wade was deemed unconstitutional by the United States Supreme Court in a decision handed down a year ago titled Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Services.
Next week, Democrats in the House of Representatives, who are now in the minority party but want to enshrine abortion rights regardless, plan to utilize an unconventional procedural strategy in an effort to force Republicans to have a public discussion on the topic.
Co-chairs of the Congressional Democratic Pro-Choice Caucus Diana DeGette (D-CO) and Barbara Lee (D-CA) have indicated that they would file a discharge petition on the “Women’s Health Protection Act.” This petition, if signed by a majority of members, would force a vote on the abortion legislation. Judy Chu, a Democrat from California who is the principal sponsor of the measure, intends to add her signature to the petition as well.
The provisions of Roe v. Wade would be restored if the Women’s Health Protection Act were to become law. This act was approved by the House of Representatives two consecutive times during the 115th Congress, allowing for its passage. According to a statement that was made public by DeGette’s office, several surveys have shown that the majority of American citizens are in favour of women having access to treatment for abortion.
The next part of the statement said that “DeGette, Lee, and Chu are hoping that there are at least six Republicans who will listen to the people of their district and help restore their right to reproductive care.”
