Career
Harry Wayne Casey founded K.C. and the Sunshine Band in 1973, and Richard Finch, an engineer for T.K. Records, was introduced to him. Thus began the musical collaboration between Casey and Finch. The initial members were just Casey and Finch. Later, they added T.K. studio musicians Jerome Smith (1953–2000) on guitar and Robert Johnson on drums.
“Blow Your Whistle” (September 1973) and “Sound Your Funky Horn” (February 1974) were issued as singles and performed well enough on the U.S. R&B chart and overseas for T.K. to request a subsequent single and album. However, “Rock Your Baby” was composed while K.C. & the Sunshine Band worked on demos. 1975 saw the group tour the United Kingdom, where “Queen of Clubs” peaked at No. 7 and was a hit.
In 1975, “Get Down Tonight” and “That’s the Way (I Like It)” brought K.C. and the Sunshine Band to prominence in the United States. Other Casey-Finch favorites include “Keep It Comin’ Love,” “I’m Your Boogie Man,” “(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty,” “Please Don’t Go,” and “Boogie Shoes,” which appeared on the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack album. 1979 Harry also sang on Teri DeSario’s hit “Yes, I’m Ready.” Casey also co-wrote the 1975 U.K. smash “I Ain’t Lyin'” by George McCrae.
Due to the increasing prominence of new wave and synthpop in the early 1980s, Casey dissolved the Sunshine Band and released several pop-oriented solo albums. “Give It Up” was released as a solo single, reaching No. 1 in the United Kingdom and the Top 20 in the United States in 1984. Casey reformed the Sunshine Band in the mid-1990s due to renewed interest in 1970s music reformations.
