Gus Williams was born to actress Ashley Williams and producer Neal Dodson on October 10, 1953, in Mount Vernon, New York, United States, under the zodiac sign of Libra, of American nationality and black descent. He was born to actress Ashley Williams and producer Neal Dodson. He is the brother of Ray Williams, also a former professional American basketball player who played in the NBA from 1977 to 1987. Gus and his brother, Ray, were raised in the Christian faith. He attended and graduated from a local senior high school in his hometown. After graduating from senior high school, Gus Williams attended the University of Southern California, where he played basketball.

Career

William started playing basketball in high school at Mount Vernon, where the New York State Sportswriters Association named him player of the year in 1971. The Golden State Warriors chose him in the second round of the 1975 NBA draft, while the Spirits of St. Louis took him in the first round of the 1975 ABA draft. Williams received a contract with the Warriors for the 1975–76 season and was chosen to the NBA All-Rookie Team in his first season. Williams played for the Warriors for two seasons prior becoming a free agent and signing with the Seattle SuperSonics before the 1977–78 season.

Williams was drafted to the NBA All-Star Game twice, to the All-NBA First Team in 1982, and the All-NBA Second Team in 1980, while playing for the Seattle Supersonics. William Gus, whose style of play earned him the moniker “the Wizard,” led the Sonics to the 1979 NBA championship, averaging 28.6 points per game in the Finals. Due to a contract dispute, Williams missed the whole 1980–1981 season while in the prime of his career. In 1981–82, he returned and was voted NBA Comeback Player of the Year after scoring seventh in the league (23.4). After that, William played three more seasons with the Sonics. He joined the Washington Bullets in 1984. During the 1984–85 season, Williams played with another player with the same name.

Throughout a career that spanned 12 years, from 1975 to 1987, he concluded with a 17.1 points-per-game scoring average. Williams’ No. 1 jersey was retired by the Seattle Sonics in 2004. USC retired Williams’s jersey in 2016. Williams’ younger brother Ray (1954-2013) participated in an NBA competition.
