The Texas homeowner used a rifle to confront the would-be burglar with a machete.
When a guy with a machete tried to enter his house in Texas, a worried homeowner took up arms and repelled him.
The moment a machete-wielding intruder approached the family’s Liberty Hill house, located north of Austin, was seen on Darryl Stevens’ home security video.
“I definitely freaked out at that point. Stevens told FOX 7, “I just went into full fight-or-flight mode because I have two little kids here in the house.”
Stevens instinctively grabbed his 9mm pistol and locked up his house.
“I began to dash about the home. I hurried upstairs and quickly shut all the doors. Fortunately, I had a gun with me, so I quickly grabbed my 9mm, unlocked it, and rushed down,” Stevens remarked.
After climbing a fence, the suspect—later identified as Jerry Escamilla, 43—was able to reach the top deck of the family’s house.
When he got there, Stevens’ pistol was there to meet him.
“Told him he’s got to leave, or he’s going to lose his life, you know?” replied he. “Luckily, after I did that, he dropped the machete.”
A rifle was seen aiming at the intruder as Escamilla retraced his steps and descended again in the footage.
Escamilla was taken into custody by local police when Stevens’ wife dialed 911. The 43-year-old is being jailed on a $10,000 bail after being charged with criminal trespassing and failing to identify.
According to Stevens, they just relocated further from Austin in order to “feel safe.”
“I simply had to defend my family, and I did exactly that. Fortunately, I was spared having to pull my gun,” Stevens remarked. “It’s just not something you expect to happen in Liberty Hill in the country or way out in the country in the very back of this new, nice neighborhood… we moved out here, we moved further out of the city to feel safe.”
According to Stevens, he intends to increase the level of security at their house and transform it into “Fort Knox.”
As a family, we feel violated and as like our home, which is our safe haven, has been taken away from us. Even stating it nearly makes me feel a little emotional. “It’s unfair,” he declared. “Security is undoubtedly being increased. To have one upstairs and one below, we’re acquiring a couple more guns. Additional security elements and fences will be installed. floodlights. Right now, I’m going to make this building into Fort Knox.”
The Stand Your Ground statute in Texas gave gun owners the right to use deadly force to protect themselves against threats, even if they couldn’t flee first. The gunman cannot start the fight, according to the law.
