Graham Potter has come under immense pressure following Chelsea’s run of form. The calls for his sacking have intensified after another transfer window spending spree.
Chelsea has spent over £490 million in the transfer window since the takeover by the Todd Boehly-led consortium. The West London club has seen the arrival of 18 new players in the last five months.
However, the level of investment in the transfer market has yet to be reflected in the team’s performance on the pitch. Chelsea are 9th in the Premier League; they are also out of the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, and they face Borussia Dortmund in round 16 of the Champions later this month.
The English manager has played down the claims that he would be sacked if Chelsea fails to make the top four and insisted that he is not envois of any club or managers.
What did Graham Potter say?
The 47- year-old said in an interview on Sky Sports: “It’s normal.
“We’ve spent the money we’ve spent. The media aren’t going to let that go under the radar. All of football will be singing that song, that’s for sure. Everybody is entitled to their opinion. There’s free speech, which is good. I don’t worry about that.
“Envy isn’t a good quality to have. I’ve never been envious of anybody. I’ve tried to work and do the best I can in the circumstances I have.
“You’re best to compare to yourself rather than somebody else because you don’t know the context or the situation. I also understand that’s the world we’re in, and that’s fine by me.
“Most managers would love to be in my position.
“It’s a fantastic football club and a really exciting time. You should never really compare yourself to somebody else because you don’t know their circumstances. All you can do is try to improve yourself.
“Anybody that works here should be excited and grateful and happy, because it’s a fantastic football club.”
Meanwhile, Stan Collymore has urged Chelsea to go for Jurgen Klopp if Liverpool sacks him.
He said on Caught offside: “The reality is, if FSG sack Klopp, there is no one else out there better equipped to do a better job.
“So anyone calling for him to go should be careful what they wish for because I’m certain that if he suddenly became available, you’d have Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, PSG, and even Chelsea all lining up.
“I still don’t think Jurgen Klopp should be facing the sack at Liverpool. I know they’re having an awful season, but we need to look further back than just the past six months.
“Remember where Liverpool were when he came in – they were a real mess!
“They had a below-average squad, were barely competitive, and couldn’t attract top players.
“Klopp single-handedly changed all of that and went on to win every trophy possible along the way, and he didn’t just turn them into a winning side, he completely revolutionised their style of play.”
