MacRae was diagnosed with oral and jaw cancer. At the age of 64, he passed away in Lincoln, Nebraska, home from pneumonia. The Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln, Nebraska is where he was laid to rest.
Career
MacRae had a baritone voice. He sang with the Harry James and Les Brown bands during the 1939 New York World’s Fair because he won a contest.
In 1942, he made his Broadway debut, and not long after signed his first recording deal. He recorded a lot of his popular songs with Jo Stafford.
On Junior Miss, he filled up for an injured performer.
With conductor Archie Bleyer, he was featured on the Gordon MacRae Show on the CBS radio network in 1945. Emerging musicians like accordionist John Serry Sr. were highlighted on the broadcast. MacRae also hosted and starred in The Railroad Hour, a half-hour anthology series that included abridged adaptations of popular Broadway musicals. Most of the shows have had CD reissues since they were originally released as successful studio cast recordings.
