President Biden has asked Congress to authorize roughly $12 billion in new aid to Ukraine this month, but Republicans are skeptical because they believe the request was timed to help Democrats in the upcoming midterm elections in November.
Lawmakers from the Republican Party are concerned that the White House is pushing the assistance package because it knows certain Republicans would vote against it if there aren’t sufficient accountability metrics in place to ensure the money is used wisely. They argue that if Republicans don’t stand firm, Democrats would use the issue to wrongly paint them as isolationists and Putin stooges.
Rep. Andy Biggs (R-Ariz.) stated of President Biden’s latest call, “This latest call is merely a shallow midterm political gimmick that will only undermine our country in the near term and the long run.”
Republican senators have pointed out that the financing request comes at an awkward time given Biden’s previous behavior, in which he has tried to portray MAGA Republicans as a threat to democracy.
