Glenn Allen Youngkin was born to Ellis and Carroll Wayne Youngkin at a local hospital in Richmond, Virginia, United States, on December 9, 1966. Firm Career
Youngkin joined the investment bank First Boston in 1990 after graduating from Rice University, where he served on mergers and acquisitions and capital market financing. Youngkin left Credit Suisse First Boston in 1992 to pursue an MBA. After earning an MBA in 1994, he joined McKinsey & Company, a management consulting firm. Youngkin joined The Carlyle Group, a Washington, D.C.-based private equity firm, in August 1995, initially serving as a member of the U.S. acquisition team.
In 1999, he was appointed as a Carlyle partner and managing director. He managed the company’s United Kingdom acquisition team from 2000 to 2005 and its global industrial sector investment team from 2005 to 2008, dividing his time between London and Washington. In April 2008, the founders of Carlyle urged Youngkin to step back from deal-making to focus on the firm’s broader strategy. In 2009, Carlyle’s non-deal, day-to-day operations were overseen by a seven-person operating committee, which Youngkin led. Also in 2009, Youngkin and Daniel Akerson joined the company’s executive committee, which had previously only included the three founders.
