He began his formal music education at Juilliard and got a bachelor’s degree from Dillard University in 1958. He started his singing career with Harry Belafonte and the Belafonte Folk Singers.
1960 Folkways Records released South African Freedom Songs (EPC-601) by Garret Morris, Pete Seeger, and Guy Carawan. Among the many Broadway musicals in which he appeared were Hallelujah, Baby! and Ain’t Supposed to Die a Natural Death. 1965, he collaborated with Amiri Baraka, Sun Ra, Albert Ayler, and Sonia Sanchez at the Black Arts Repertory Theatre/School in Harlem.
During this time, the New York City Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation frequently searched and monitored the playhouse. Roll Out, a CBS sitcom, lasted only one season, and he appeared as a police officer in The Anderson Tapes (1971). He played a teacher in the 1975 film Cooley High.
