Former Chelsea defender Frank Lebouef has raised question marks on Chelsea’s pursuit of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. According to a former French international, the Gabonese international could end up as Romelo Lukaku because of Thomas Tuchel’s tactics.
Chelsea’s lack of a striker had already been evident in their first two games this season. The blues had played Raheem Sterling as their striker in their first two games with Kai Havertz and Mason Mount sporting him.
All Chelsea’s two goals so far this season in the Premier League from open play were scored by defenders.
The blues have already submitted a bid of £22.5 million to Barcelona for the Gabonese international. Barcelona is yet to respond to Chelsea’s bid.
Thomas Tuchel sees Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as the solution to Chelsea’s goal-scoring woes after the departure of Timo Werner and Romelo Lukaku. Aubameyang adapting to the Premier League will not be a cause of concern after scoring 68 goals in 128 Premier League appearances with Arsenal.
He also has a good relationship with Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel. The Gabonese international scored 79 goals at Borrusia Dortmund under Thomas Tuchel for two years.
However, Frank Lebouef believes Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could face the same fate as Romelu Lukaku.
Chelsea has a long history of striking and failing to succeed at Stamford Bridge despite their goals-scoring reputation before arriving at Chelsea.
The latest is Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner. The duo before their arrival at Chelsea were listed among the best five strikers in their respective clubs. The blues have to splash huge sums of money on strikers since 2004. The likes of Alvaro Morata, Fernando Torres, and Andriy Shevchenko all failed to make an impact at Chelsea.
What did Frank Lebouef say will be the reason for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang failing at Chelsea?
The former Chelsea defender told ESPN that Thomas Tuchel will be the reason for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s failure at Chelsea, saying: “I have some question marks, he’s over 30 and the last two years haven’t been very good for him in terms of goals and consistency.
“I have a lot of respect for his father who was a former teammate I followed Pierre-Emerick’s career in Dortmund and then Arsenal. He’s a fantastic player but I want to see before judging.
“It depends on Tuchel’s decision and how he wants to play. If it’s like against Spurs with the rotation up front we don’t know who plays in the middle or on the side, I don’t think it’s going to work and it won’t be useful to have Aubameyang.
“If you play like you should have played with Lukaku, meaning with a real striker and serving him it can be interesting.
“But we saw last season it didn’t happen with Lukaku so why suddenly will Tuchel change the way he wants to play I don’t know. I don’t see that coming.
“I don’t know if Aubameyang will be stronger than the curse that hits all strikers that have played for Chelsea lately.
“I hope he will be successful but I want to see before judging.”
