On Thursday, a Texas jury concluded that a former police officer who had shot Atatiana Jefferson through her home’s window in 2019 had committed manslaughter.
While responding to a call about an open front door, former Fort Worth officer Aaron Dean, who is White, shot the 28-year-old Black woman through a rear window of her Texas house.
Dean was also accused of murder by the jury, although they ultimately found him guilty of manslaughter. Before finding him guilty, the jury deliberated for more than 13 hours over two days.
Jefferson was playing video games with her 8-year-old nephew at the time, and the boy informed police that his aunt drew a gun after hearing strange noises coming from behind the house.
