Former Chelsea midfielder Andrew Townsend has urged Chelsea target Raheem Sterling to sign for Chelsea.
Raheem Sterling joined Manchester City in 2015 from Liverpool for £44million on a five-year deal. following his transfer, Sterling became the most expensive English player of all time.
Sterling grew to become an influential player for Manchester City under Pep Guardiola.Sterling last season lost his place in the Manchester City lineup with Pep Guardiola preferring Phil Foden and Jack Grealish.
The 27-year-old English international scored 131 goals in 339 appearances for Manchester City.
Sterling has also won four Premier League titles, four Carabao Cups, and one FA Cup with Manchester City.
Raheem Sterling has one year left on his Manchester City contract and the English international has emerged as a transfer target for Chelsea with other interests from clubs abroad.
However, Andrew Townsend has advised Raheem Sterling to make the Chelsea move.
What did Andrew Townsend say about Raheem Sterling moving to Chelsea?
The former Chelsea midfielder said via talkSPORTS: “I don’t think it would be a bad thing now for Raheem to have a change. I don’t think that’s a bad thing at all for him, to move to a club like Chelsea.
“It’s always an added bonus to come and play for a London club, living in London and being around London is what top players would prefer of course.
“He’s shown at City that he can operate at the very top. If Chelsea can get that done at £40million they should bite City’s hand off.”
The former Chelsea player added: “I define world-class as the best players in the world… he’s probably the next tier below.
“The best players in the world should be a small bracket of players. When you talk about world-class players you’re talking about Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, that type who are world-class players… you can’t throw world-class as a blanket.
“I think if you look at City’s attacking talent… would you have Grealish ahead of Sterling? I wouldn’t. I’m a big fan of Grealish but I think Sterling’s better.
“I’d have Sterling ahead of Mahrez although Mahrez is a terrific player but I think you get more defensively out of Sterling… in a big game I’d have Sterling over him.
“Does Sterling get in my best XI? He does for me but he doesn’t for Pep so it looks like they’ll let him go. If I was a Chelsea fan I’d be more than happy having Sterling.”
Manchester City has placed a £50 million price tag on Raheem Sterling and Chelsea is willing to make a move to any team provided he is guaranteed regular playing time.
