The parents of an 8-month-old child from Sarasota, Florida, who passed away on May 31, were apprehended late last week after an investigation revealed that the infant tested positive for lethal levels of fentanyl.
At 5:15 p.m., Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to a residence near Bee Ridge Road in response to allegations that an 8-month-old infant had died.
The 8-month-old’s father, Nicholas Alexander, and a companion reportedly rushed him to Doctors Hospital after discovering him unresponsive.
The child’s mother, Carissa Alexander, was caring for the infant when it was discovered face-down on couch cushions within the residence.
Investigators assert that the infant was not examined between 10:30 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. that day, until Nicholas arrived home from work.
The sheriff’s office apprehended both parents.
Police collected blood and urine samples from the couple, who were allegedly intoxicated while being interrogated.
According to the sheriff’s office, the autopsy report revealed the infant had been deceased for several hours and tested positive for lethal levels of fentanyl.
Nicholas and Carissa have been charged with aggravated child manslaughter by the sheriff’s office and are being detained without bond at the Sarasota County Correctional Facility.
