A federal court has temporarily blocked an Illinois ban on some semiautomatic firearms and high-capacity magazines. This decision was made by the state’s highest court.
The judge who made the judgment, Stephen Patrick McGlynn of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois, announced it on Friday afternoon. He said in his opinion that the court “must be mindful of the rights guaranteed by the Constitution.”
This restriction was put into law in January by Democratic Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, and it contains consequences for anybody who “carries or possesses…” a handgun. Pritzker is the governor of Illinois. Any person who “manufactures, sells, delivers, imports, or purchases any assault weapon or.50 caliber rifle”
All firearms that are in the possession of law-abiding citizens in Illinois are required to be registered with the Illinois State Police.
Plaintiff Gun Owners of America issued a statement in which they emphasized that Pritzker need to heed the ruling as a cautionary tale.
