Cartagena was signed to Relativity Records in the early 1990s as Fat Joe da Gangsta and a member of the rap group D.I.T.C., releasing tracks and collaborating with several musicians that he would eventually sign to his label. His first album, Represent, was released in 1993 and included production by The Beatnuts, Diamond D, Lord Finesse, and others. The debut song, “Flow Joe,” landed at number one on the Billboard Hot Rap Singles list; other minor successes from the album were “Watch the Sound” and “This Shit Is Real.”
Fat Joe’s second studio album, Jealous One’s Envy, was released in 1995 and peaked at #71 on The Billboard 200 and #7 on Top R&B/Hip Hop Albums. KRS-One featured on the album, while Diamond D produced it. The first track, “Success,” failed to chart, but his second single, “Envy,” reached #8 on the Hot Rap Tracks list. Fat Joe happened to discover his rap favorite, L.L. Cool J, in another room with Trackmasters, working on the remix version of L.L.’s hit “I Shot Ya” one day while composing for the album at Chung King Studios. Joe participated in the single and the accompanying video with Foxy Brown, Keith Murray, and Prodigy of Mobb Deep after being invited to contribute a verse.
