Expert Tips on How to Clean Laminate Vinyl Plank Flooring

Laminate vinyl plank flooring has become popular for homeowners due to its durability, affordability, and stylish appearance. Once you’ve selected the perfect laminate flooring and installed it in your home, caring for your flooring investment is just as important as the design and education process that came before it. Failing to do so will impact your flooring investments’ longevity and appearance.

There are thousands of guides on the internet on how to keep laminate clean, but we’ve found that they’re generic and lack personal experience. As a flooring store serving the Las Vegas Valley since the late 80s with a company history dating back to the 1930s, we’ve seen our fair share of damage and dullness due to improper care.

The tips below come from our personal experience as flooring experts.

Regular Sweeping or Vacuuming

We know, we know, this is one you’ve seen and heard repeatedly. But you’re not being told that failure to routinely sweep or vacuum your vinyl flooring can lead to a dull appearance as large debris like rocks, dirt, and sand can cause severe grit build-up on each plank and grout. We recommend daily sweeps or vacuuming via Rumbas or similar devices with a soft-bristle broom or brush attachment.

Avoid Excess Moisture

One thing we cannot stress enough is that water-resistant laminate flooring is not waterproof. The former means that it can resist spills, accidents, or pools of water that are cleaned up immediately. Excess moisture can damage laminate plank flooring, causing warping or swelling. To clean your floors effectively, use a damp mop (avoid excessive use of steam mops) or microfiber mop instead of soaking them with water. Wring out the mop thoroughly before using it; never leave standing water on the floor.

Use the Right Cleaning Solution

Selecting the appropriate cleaning solution is crucial for laminate plank flooring. Avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive cleaners, or anything with ammonia, bleach, or wax, as these can dull the finish or cause permanent damage. Instead, opt for a manufacturer-recommended laminate floor cleaner or create your own gentle cleaning solution by mixing warm water with a few drops of mild dish soap.

Avoid Sharp or Heavy Objects

Prevent scratches and dents by placing felt pads under furniture legs and using rugs or mats in high-traffic areas. Avoid dragging heavy or sharp objects across the floor to protect its surface.

Perform Periodic Deep Cleaning

In addition to your regular cleaning routine, consider performing a deep cleaning every few months. This involves using a specialized laminate floor cleaner to remove built-up residue and restore the floor’s luster. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for deep cleaning products.

Prevent Sunlight Damage

Laminate can be fade-resistant – to a limit, but direct sunlight can cause laminate plank flooring to fade or discolor over time. To protect your floors, use curtains or blinds to block UV rays during the sunniest parts of the day. You can also rearrange furniture periodically to ensure even exposure to sunlight.

Handle Tough Stains Carefully

Avoid using abrasive materials or harsh chemicals for stubborn stains like ink, marker, or scuff marks. Instead, gently rub the stain using a soft cloth or sponge dampened with a mild cleaning solution. If the stain persists, consult your manufacturer’s guidelines or seek professional advice.

Takeaways

By following these expert tips on cleaning and caring for your laminate plank flooring, you can enjoy its beauty and longevity for years to come. Regular cleaning, preventing excess moisture, and using the right cleaning products are key to ensuring your home’s flooring investment remains a stunning feature.
