Mozambique’s opposition leader, Venancio Mondlane, has announced his return to the country after more than two months abroad, leading protests over disputed election results. In a Facebook Live, Mondlane confirmed he will return on January 9, ahead of President-elect Daniel Chapo’s inauguration on January 15.
Mondlane fled Mozambique on October 21, citing threats to his life after contesting the results of the October 9 presidential election, which declared him runner-up to the ruling Frelimo party’s candidate.
The disputed results have sparked widespread unrest, with police stations, banks, and factories targeted in violent protests across the country.
As tensions escalate, all eyes are on Mondlane’s return and how it could influence the political and security situation ahead of the swearing-in ceremony.
