For football fans there was FIFA, for American football fans there was Madden, and there were plenty of cash-grabbing spin-offs going into tennis and golf for everyone else. But now there is Undisputed. Far more than the sports-equivalents of movie tie-in games that we’re used to, Undisputed is a beautiful game from PLAION UK and Steel City Interact that is solely for the boxing fans of the world.
Do you want to know more? Take a look at our guide to everything we know about the new undisputed champion of sports games: Undisputed.
Stars of the show
Not to mention there are a lot of “dream team” situations being put to play here. Did you ever think you’d get the chance to see Muhammad Ali fight Sugar Ray Robinson? There are going to be plenty of opportunities to see the impossible in the ring with the roster of famous and iconic faces that have been added to the lineup. Famous faces that have been fully rendered into the game include Sugar Ray Leonard, Joe Frazier, Rocky Marciano, Joe Louis, Floyd Patterson, Jack Dempsey, Julio Cesar Chavez, Arturo Gatti and Roy Jones Jr. Imagine leading Rocky Marciano to his victory.
According to Steam and other websites where you can download games to your computer, that’s just the start of the roster. Over 50 players still with us today are fully rendered into the game with the kind of 3D facial technology that made LA Noire a lesson in reading facial expressions. Names like Tyson Fury, Terence Crawford and Canelo Alvarez are part of the Undisputed roster. And that’s before we mention the impressive Women’s Division that includes Katie Taylor, Jessica McCaskill, and Natasha Jonas.
Even the WBC, the British Boxing Board of Control and other boxing organisations found in the real world are featured, as well as six world-famous arenas.
You are the champion
The brilliance of Madden is that it puts you in control. You’re the one floating like a butterfly. You’re the one stinging like a bee. And you’re the one who will be hoisting the belt above your head.
Undisputed understands that the strategy of boxing is as important as the strength, and that is reflected in the gameplay. You’ll be controlling the footwork, choosing from 60 different punches from multiple angles, and engaging in inside fighting. Slip, weave, dodge, and block, and we won’t deny you the occasional bit of bravado shouted at the screen.
But it’s not going to be a walk in the park. No stamina meter has ever been as important as in Undisputed. You’ll experience intentional fouls, clinching, and the referee needing to step in. This is Undisputed, not Street Fighter. No button mashing allowed.
Prime or Comeback?
A fun leak suggests that there are various types of game modes to Undisputed. In a roundtable session, PLAION UK and Steel City Interact revealed that you can play either as “Prime” or “Comeback” characters.
That’s a good narrative that icons like Tyson Fury have regularly made use of. Can you prove that you can be out of the game and come back still on top?
There wasn’t much more detail beyond that, but Undisputed is still in its Beta era, so who knows what we might see in the future?
Undisputed as yet hasn’t got a release date, but you can access the Early Pass content on Steam.
