The EU foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, has urged European Union leaders to provide weapons to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy-led Ukraine to boost its stance in peace talks ongoing between the US, Russia, and Kyiv during a summit in Brussels on Thursday, March 20, 2025.
European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has called on EU leaders to pledge €5 billion ($5.4 billion) for artillery shells to Ukraine as Europe discusses how to bolster Ukraine and the EU’s military capabilities.
Before Kallas made the €5 billion pledge, he had proposed €40 billion in military aid to aid Ukraine but had toned down because of opposition from some countries.
“We should at least start to take a really concrete step—not only words but also deeds that we are helping Ukraine right now. Because the stronger they are on the battlefield, the stronger they are behind the negotiation table,” Kallas said.
The Trump administration is in talks with Russia and Ukraine to bring an end to the war. There are reports that the two nations are close to reaching an agreement on a partial ceasefire.
