Manchester United manager Erik Ten hag has revealed that Manchester United will look within their squad for a holding midfielder if they fail to sign Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona.
Erik Ten Hag has identified the Frenkie de Jong as his top transfer priority this summer. Manchester United has agreed on £ 85 million transfer fees with Barcelona for the 25-year-old Dutch international but the Red Devils are yet to agree on a personal. There are reports that the two parties are having difficulty agreeing on his wages.
There are also reports that Frenkie de Jong wants to stay in Barcelona for another season despite his relationship with Manchester United manager Erik Ten Hag.
However, Erik Ten Hag has disclosed that Manchester United has enough players who are capable of playing in the holding midfield role if they fail to reach a deal with Frenkie de Jong this summer.
What did Erik Ten Hag say?
In an interview with Manchester United media via the Manchester United official website, the Dutch tactician said: “What I can say is we’re looking for a player who can play in the holding midfield position, but it has to be the right one.
“There are not many in that position capable of the level we demand. When we can’t find him, we have to deal with the players in our squad now and we will develop one in that position.
“I will not comment on a certain player. We need the right player. We have a list and we qualify as the player who has the competence to play that role. We will strike the moment the player is available.”
Manchester United has completed three signings in the transfer window already. They have signed Tyrell Malacia for £ 15 million from Feyenoord, Christian Eriksen on a free transfer from Brentford, and Lisandro Martinez for £ 50 million from Ajax.
Despite completing the three signings, Erik Ten Hag admits that he would have loved to have finished all his transfer business before starting pre-season.
The former Ajax manager added: “The best and the most perfect situation is when you start pre-season with the squad fully equipped, but most of the time that’s not the fact of football, so I am realistic and I have to deal with the fact.”
Manchester United has won all their pre-season games so far beating Liverpool 4-0 to win the Asia trophy and coming from a goal down to be Melbourne victory. The Red Devils look rejuvenated under Erik Ten Hag and looking sharp and ready for the next season.
