Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez was the center of a racism row when the Argentinian won the Copa America title against Columbia during the summer.
The 23-year-old was seen in a video filmed himself alongside his teammate singing a racist chant against French players of African heritage. Enzo’s behavior was condemned heavily by both Chelsea fans and football fans alike on various social media platforms.
His actions were condemned by his Chelsea teammates Wesley Fofona and Nicolas Jackson. Chelsea conducted a full-scale investigation following the racism incident, and Enzo Fernandez issued a public apology.
The incident seems to have been “put to bed” following Enzo Enzo’s public apology, but Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca’s decision to hand over Enzo Fernandez, the captain band, against Manchester City in their opening game sparked a social media uproar, with many describing the decision as a “disgrace.”
What is Enzo Maresca’s decision to name Enzo Fernandez the captain against Manchester City?
When questioned about his captain selection after their 2-0 defeat to Manchester United, Maresca answered, “Enzo is one of the captains of this team, but he is not the only one.
“We have Reece [James], we have some more captains. The reason why s I can see his teammates recognise him, like a reference, as a captain, and he was already captain in the preseason when we changed Reece in the game.
“I said already, all of us make mistakes. It’s important o recognise Enzo made a mistake, recognised the mistake and it’s finished.”
When further asked if the decision was to send a message that the incident had been resolved, he added: “I don’t know about you, but I did some mistakes in the past and I recognised.
“As a human being, if you do a mistake and you recognise, you are not going to be punished for life.
“Enzo did a mistake, recognised. For me, he is o e of the references and I have nothing to add.”
In his apology, the remorseful Enzo Fernandez promised to donate to an anti-discrimination charity. His Chelsea teammate Wesley Fofana, who was initially angered by Enzo’s actions, later defined him and revealed he had spoken with him about it.

During Chelsea’s preseason tour in the United States, French international Wesley Fofana said: “It’s not only Enzo. It’s the Argentinian team.
“Enzo is in the video but if he was from another country, I would have posted the same thing. For sure, it wa a big story because we play in the same team.
“But now it is done, it’s good. I’m happy with his situation because he understands me, I understand him, he said sorry, I trust him, and that is the most important thing.”
