Career
Elvin Bishop, a blues guitarist, joined Paul Butterfield’s band in 1963 and stayed for five years. He was the lead guitarist at first but subsequently joined Mike Bloomfield. Bishop got his “Red Dog” moniker from a roadie with the Allman Brothers Band. In 1968, he created the Elvin Bishop Group, appearing on the album The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper alongside Bloomfield and Al Kooper.
Bishop collaborated with several blues performers, including John Lee Hooker and Clifton Chenier of Zydeco. He made a mark on FM radio stations with “Travelin’ Shoes” in 1975, and his most famous hit, “Fooled Around and Fell in Love,” was released in 1976. During the 1960s and 1970s, Bishop recorded for numerous labels and performed at the 1984 Long Beach Blues Festival.
Gettin’ My Groove Back, his first solo CD in seven years was released in 2005. He published The Blues Rolls On in 2008, which was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album. He published Red Dog Speaks in 2010.
That’s My Thing: Elvin Bishop Live in Performance, his debut live performance DVD, was released in 2011, and he garnered six nominations for the 36th Blues Music Awards in 2015.
