Early life
Emanuel Herrera Batista is the real name of El Alfa.
E. L. A. Rapper El Jefe, most commonly known as El Alfa, was born in the Dominican Republic on December 18, 1990. El Alfa was born in Bajos de Haina, Santo Domingo’s
In Bajos de Haina, life was complicated. El Alfa has worked hard in manual labor since he was a little boy. Moreover, every member of his family held a blue-collar profession. This made this the standard job for men in his town. But El Alfa always believed that he was meant for far more.
As soon as El Alfa could talk properly, he would sing Spanish church songs at the family events. His ability to shift pitches, a talent he is still known for today, amazed his family. Also, whenever he could, he participated in the local church choir.
Unfortunately, El Alfa struggled in school. He frequently bunked classes to hang out with friends and compete in rap battles with neighborhood kids. Apparently, his passion was much more perfectly matched with musical composition.
His parents disapproved of his vision and encouraged him to continue working. El Alfa left his house at 17 in rebellion to pursue a career in Latin rap music.
Career
In 2008, his musical career began when he teamed up with fellow Dominican Dembow musician Eddy Wilson to form a duo.
They released street-style dembow songs like “El Fogon” and “Conmigo No” during their short time together. The duo soon gained recognition in their hometown by performing at parties, clubs, and venues.
They, however, parted in 2009 after deciding to pursue individual careers instead.
The song “Coche Bomba,” which was Batista’s debut solo release in 2009, created a buzz in the Dominican urban music industry and established him as an upcoming performer known as El Alfa El Jefe. In 2010, he followed up the popularity of that song with “Coco Mordan,” another tune that included a hard-hitting beat and showcased the versatility of his high-pitched vocals.
When El Alfa released “Fuin Fuan” in April 2013, he continued his style of high-paced Dembow with a dash of DJ Patio’s beats, which helped to increase his popularity.
Early in the 2010s, his solo success gave him exposure to excellent chances within the industry. Most notably, in 2016, his song “Tarzan” garnered millions of views on YouTube in a short period. The song’s storyline describes his sexual relations with a woman who screams like Tarzan.
The track got the attention of Nicky Jam, an immensely popular Latin artist. Many other great names in the industry were also interested in pairing up with the emerging star.
He was able to get significant collaborations in that year as well, performing “T Me Gusta Pila” with Puerto Rican musician Farruko and “Humo Excsame (Remix)” with Musicologo The Libro. The latter collaboration would be significant to El Alfa El Jefe’s career in the coming years.
