College career

After receiving numerous offers as a high school student, Bledsoe finally decided to enroll at the neighboring Washington State University. During his three years at the university, he had a record-breaking collegiate football career and emerged as the center of attention of the Cougars’ offense. Bledsoe guided his team to a 9-3 record and a Copper Bowl victory over Utah in 1992. In addition, he won Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year and broke numerous WSU records for passing yards in a single game and season.

New England Patriots

After forgoing his final year at WSU, Drew entered the 1993 NFL Draft, with the New England Patriots selecting him first overall. The Patriots’ fortunes took a turn for the better as he quickly established himself as a critical team member, significantly improving their performance. He guided the team to a wild card berth and a 10-6 record 1994. After a poor 1995 season, Drew’s influence was undeniable in a stellar 1996 campaign that helped the Patriots win the AFC championship and make it to Super Bowl XXXI. Drew’s impact continued as he assisted in guiding the Patriots to the postseason again in 1997. Still, the Pittsburgh Steelers eliminated them in the second round.

In 1998, he maintained his success by becoming the first quarterback in NFL history to complete touchdown passes that won a game in the final 30 seconds of back-to-back games. The Patriots advanced to the postseason once more. In 1999, Drew’s play suffered as he was benched 55 times in his career, and the Patriots finished with an 8-8 record. 

Buffalo Bills

Drew’s trade to the Buffalo Bills, the Patriots’ division rival, in 2002 was a pivotal moment. His 4,359 yards and 24 touchdowns passing during his first season on the team was a stellar performance. Bledsoe set and holds a team record with 463 yards passing in a Week 2 overtime victory over the Minnesota Vikings, one of his standout games. Despite a strong 2003 season, the Bills’ offense was marred by multiple injuries. The following season, Drew’s final with the team, was a nail-biter as the Bills missed the playoffs by just one game, adding a touch of drama to his career with the team. 

Dallas Cowboys

In 2005, Drew signed a contract with the Dallas Cowboys following his release by the Bills. During his impressive rookie season, he passed for more than 3,000 yards and several game-winning drives in the fourth quarter or overtime. With Bledsoe in charge, the team finished 9–7. Six games into his second and final season with the Cowboys in 2006, he was replaced by Tony Romo due to his lack of success. After the season, the team let Bledsoe go. In April of 2007, he declared his retirement from the NFL.
