Today, we are discussing a controversial plan by President-elect topic Donald Trump. A proposed plan to reinstate a ban on transgender individuals serving in the U.S. military. Let’s break down what’s happening and what it means.
In Trump’s first administration he introduced a ban on transgender military service, sparking numerous nationwide protests and legal battles. However, in 2021, President Joe Biden reversed this ban, allowing trans into freely into the military. He said, “allowing all qualified Americans to serve their country in uniform is better for the military and better for the country because an inclusive force is a more effective force.”
Like a rollercoaster in governance, Trump recently announced plans to bring back the ban, once he re-enters office in January, while reaffirming that the move is about military ‘readiness’ and ‘cost savings,’ although these arguments have been widely criticized.
Meanwhile, studies also show transgender service members have minimal impact on military budgets or operations.
His previous ban in 2017 only prohibited transgenders from signing up as new members. This new proposed ban is taking a different turn. It would medically discharge all current trans service members, deeming them unfit to serve.
Advocates are of the view that the ban discriminates against patriotic Americans willing to serve and many others believe it undermines inclusivity and sends a harmful message to LGBTQ+ individuals nationwide.
Currently an estimated 15,000 trans service members are actively serving in the US Army, according to the Williams Institute, with some counting decades.
Now some close sources to Trump have been talking.
Trump-Vance transition spokeswoman, Karoline Leavitt has denied the claims, telling The Times that “these unnamed sources are speculating and have no idea what they are actually talking about. No decisions on this issue have been made. No policy should ever be deemed official unless it comes directly from President Trump or his authorized spokespeople.
Trump’s Secretary of Defense nominee, Pete Hegseth also opposed not just trans people in combat roles, but on women as well. He says that the military is being degraded by “woke” policies, and argues contrary to evidence that trans service members create “complications” within the ranks, including by being provided with medical care, which he called “trans lunacy.”
