Derek Dooley was born to Vince Dooley and Barbara Meshad Dooley in Athens, Georgia, United States, on June 10, 1968. He was born under the astrological sign Gemini, of white ethnicity and American nationality. He was raised in the Christian faith. Career
Playing career
Derek began his college coaching career in 1996 as a graduate associate at the University of Georgia. His father, Vince Dooley, was the athletic director and head football coach there when he won the national championship in 1980. Dooley was the wide receivers coach at Southern Methodist University from 1997 to 1999 and the assistant recruiting coordinator for his final two years there.
He joined Nick Saban’s staff at LSU in 2000 as the Tigers’ recruiting coordinator and tight ends coach, a position he held until 2002. Dooley then spent the 2003–04 seasons working with the Tigers’ special teams and running backs before being promoted to assistant head coach in 2004. When Saban was hired as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins in 2005, Dooley also left LSU. Dooley was appointed the next head coach of Louisiana Tech University on December 17, 2006. After the Bulldogs finished 3-10 in 2006, previous coach Jack Bicknell was sacked on December 4. He replaced him. He held both positions from 2008 to 2009, making him the only head football coach in the nation to do so.
Dooley won the Coach of the Year award from the Louisiana Sports Writers’ Association in 2008 after leading Louisiana Tech to its first postseason victory in 30 years before taking over as head coach.
Dooley was appointed as the University of Tennessee’s 22nd head coach on January 15, 2010. He took over for Lane Kiffin, who left Tennessee after one season to become the head coach of the University of Southern California. After working in the NFL for a while, Dooley returned to school. NFL coaching career
On January 10, 2005, Dooley was named to the Dolphins’ coaching staff as tight ends coach by Nick Saban, with whom Dooley had previously worked at Louisiana State University. Dooley was on the Dolphins’ staff for two years before leaving in 2006 to become the new head football coach at Louisiana Tech. He was Nick Saban’s assistant coach for seven years, including a BCS National Championship at LSU in 2003.
Dooley was officially hired as the Dallas Cowboys Wide Receivers coach on February 5, 2013. Dez Bryant was named to his only three Pro Bowls while under Dooley’s supervision, and he was named 1st Team All-Pro in 2014. Bryant set the Dallas Cowboys record for most touchdowns in a season that same year. During Dooley’s tenure, Terrance Williams and undrafted free agent Cole Beasley were developed. On January 27, 2020, it was disclosed that Dooley would join the Giants coaching staff, reporting to Joe Judge. He was named the team’s tight ends coach for the 2021 season, replacing Freddie Kitchens. Dooley was let go at the end of the 2021 season.
