Senate Democrats have proposed a new grant program that would help pay for travel, lodging, meals, and other costs for women who need to go to another state to get an abortion.

This week, Sens. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) and Patty Murray (D-WA) introduced a bill that would set up a $350 million-a-year grant program to help women pay for these costs. The five-year program would cost a total of $1.75 billion, and the money would go to non-profit groups that can help women in states with strict abortion laws get to states with less strict laws so they can get an abortion.

The two senators said the bill would give women more choices after the Supreme Court ruled against Roe v. Wade and left it up to the states to decide how to regulate abortion.
