Rep. Dan Goldman, D-N.Y., contended on Wednesday that the court system could be “two-tiered” against Hunter Biden before of the current hearing.
MSNBC anchor Jonathan Lemire pressed Goldman on Republican claims that the Justice Department “has been weaponized by this White House” in its attacks on former President Donald Trump while supporting Hunter Biden.
Goldman refuted the allegations, claiming that Hunter’s recent tax charges demonstrated that the Justice Department was likely used against him.
“Based on my experience, I’m surprised Hunter Biden was charged with these crimes at all.” Take a look at the history of civil and criminal tax enforcement, and consider Roger Stone’s case. He essentially did the same thing as Hunter Biden and only got $400. So, in my opinion, the fact that he’s even considering a plea bargain illustrates a two-tiered system of justice against Hunter Biden, not in favor of Donald Trump or the Republicans,” Goldman added.
He also slammed the notion that there was any political reason to oppose Trump or to support the Biden family.
“In truth, that’s why they’re attempting to discredit the Hunter Biden probe, which was conducted by a Trump-appointed U.S. attorney. And now we have a special counsel who is on the verge of charging Donald Trump with this — with another indictment, but the special counsel is fully independent of the Biden Justice Department, which is precisely the issue. So there is no foundation to argue that this is somehow political intervention or, as they say, weaponization of the Department of Justice,” Goldman added.
During the episode, Rep. Jacob Moskowitz, D-Fla., stood beside Goldman and chastised Republicans for holding the whistleblower hearing on Wednesday.
“This is about hurting Joe Biden’s numbers while helping Donald Trump.” This isn’t about telling the truth. This isn’t about Hunter at all. It all comes down to polls. Every time they have a hearing, they poll the audience to determine if the message is getting through. “This entire year in the [House Oversight Committee] has been a circus,” Moskowitz said.
The House Oversight Committee grilled IRS special agents Gary Shapley, and Joseph Ziegler on their whistleblower claims that investigators were frequently barred and stonewalled from pursuing more material that may incriminate President Biden. The guys claimed that there was a pattern of “slow-walking investigative steps” in the investigation of Hunter Biden’s tax and weapons allegations.
MSNBC did not air live footage of the hearing on Wednesday, instead opting to summarize the event with restricted pieces.
