Manchester United are two wins in their five Premier League games after a goalless draw against Crystal Palace.
The Red Devils’ inconsistent performance and struggle in the Premier League have put a lot of pressure on their manager, Erik Ten Hag. Many fans are calling for his sacking after a decent summer and spending over € 200 million on transfers.
After winning back-to-back matches against Southampton and Barnsley and scoring ten goals, Erik Ten Hag’s side was expected to get the three points against Crystal Palace. However, they managed to draw, which was a lucky result following Andre Onaana’s heroic second-half performance.
However, former Premier League midfielder and now pundit Danny Murphy claims Manchester United’s lack of goals in the Premier League and experienced striker could hamper their chances of finishing in the top four and qualifying for the Premier League.
What did Danny Murphy say on Manchester United’s top-four chances?
On BBC’s Match of the Day, he said: “I think they’ve made some decent signings in the defensive area of the pitch to help them in that respect.
“But they didn’t address the shortage of goals. Last season, they scored the joint lowest amount in the top half. For Manchester United.
“They brought in Zirkzee, the only attacking player. He’s a young lad, he’s not a goal scorer per se, and he’s not really a centre-forward.
“That’s not going to get Manchester United where they want to be in terms of competing for the title, even top four I think they’re going struggle even if they make chances and have creativity in the team.”
Murphy thinks Manchester United’s current striker will not help the Red Devils score the needed goals in their quest to qualify for the Champions League next season.
He added: “They’ll expect more from Hojlund, he’s come back today,’ he said. ‘But I think Ivan Toney was the one.”
Meanwhile, Erik Ten Hag also highlighted Manchester United’s wastefulness in front of the goals against Crystal Palace.
The Dutchman said after the game: “I think we played very good and had total control of the game. In and out of possession, I think we played very good.
“The only thing was in the box, and in the box is always where the game is decided. We should be more clinical.
“There is always one chance [for the opposition] and they got the chance in the 44th minute – it was a big chance they got. One mistake leads to a big chance for them. At the time, we should have been 2-0 or 3-0 up.”
