A Danish official boldly told U.S. President Donald Trump to “f**k off” over his renewed desire to buy Greenland. Yes, you heard that right. Donald Trump has repeatedly made calls for US ownership of the world’s largest island despite being told it is not for sale.
Greenland is the world’s largest island and has been a strategic point of interest for centuries. From the Vikings who first settled there in the 9th century to the Inuit, who have called it home for millennia, Greenland’s history is as icy as its climate.
Fast forward to the 19th century, and the United States has had its eyes on Greenland since Secretary of State William Seward’s failed attempt to purchase it after acquiring Alaska. The island’s strategic location and rich mineral resources have made it a coveted prize in the geopolitical chess game.
Denmark is home to a large US military base and sits in an area of strategic military importance for the US, China, and Russia.
Trump’s fascination with Greenland isn’t new. Back in 2019, he floated the idea of buying the island, only to be met with laughter and rejection from both Denmark and Greenland. Undeterred, Trump canceled a state visit to Denmark when his offer was rejected, proving that he doesn’t take “no” for an answer light.
And in 2025, Trump is at it again, claiming that Greenland is “necessary for international security” and suggesting that the people of Greenland would be happier under U.S. ownership.
A Danish member of the European Parliament, Anders Vistisen, told Trump in a fiery speech in no uncertain terms that Greenland “is not for sale” and added a colorful “f*** off” for good measure.
The vice president of the European Parliament, Nicolae Stefanuta, warned Vistisen that his choice of words was unacceptable. Stefanuta said, and I quote, “It is not okay in this house of democracy. Regardless of what we think of Mr. Trump, it is not possible to use such language.”
Vistisen appeared to change his message to Trump. He said in an X post on Wednesday, “Mr President, in the Danish People’s Party, we fight for Denmark just as you fight for your country, the USA. Greenland is Danish; it is not for sale, and neither threats nor prayers can change that.” “Treat your allies well, and we’ll return the courtesy.”
So, what’s really going on here? Some speculate that Trump’s renewed interest in Greenland is a distraction from domestic issues, while others believe it is part of a broader plan to assert U.S. dominance in the Arctic. Whatever the case, one thing is clear: the Danish aren’t backing down, and Greenland isn’t going anywhere.
