Sources report that Chelsea has rejected Manchester United’s latest offer for Mason Mount but has proposed face-to-face negotiations in an effort to close the deal.
Chelsea rejected United’s bid of £55 million ($69.9 million) plus add-ons on Friday. It was their third unsuccessful offer, following proposals of £40m ($50.9m) and £50m ($63.6m).
According to sources, Chelsea has offered United £58m ($73.7m) plus an additional £7m ($8.9m) in performance-based incentives. They have also offered to confer with United States officials in an effort to resolve the situation.
Mount, 24 years old, is eager to transfer to Old Trafford after ruling out the possibility of signing a new contract with Chelsea.
His contract has one year remaining, and Chelsea does not want to lose him for anything next summer.
Mount’s contract with Chelsea expires in a year, and he has informed the club that he wishes to leave. United believes their latest offer represents a good deal for Chelsea.
Chelsea insists they have already substantially reduced their initial valuation of £70 million ($89 million).
According to ESPN’s sources, Manchester United wants to sign Mount as soon as possible to ensure he is available for their preseason tour of the United States, which begins in New York on July 20.
