The claim that “discriminatory” laws in California is to blame for Black individuals being “burdened with child support debt” was made several times throughout the 1,100 pages that made up the study.
The California Reparations Task Force has made a proposal to the Democratically controlled state legislature to cancel any child support arrears and interest payments owed by African-Americans in the state of California.
The group gave a presentation of its final report the week before last, in which it came to the conclusion that “discriminatory” policies “have torn African American families apart,” with one of the consequences being “the disproportionate amount of African Americans who are burdened with child support debt.”
According to the approximately 1,100-page report, the number of Californians who owe money for child support is disproportionately comprised of people of African descent.
It went on to claim that the 10% interest that the state charges on arrears in child support “hinders” their ability to pay for further education, vocational training, meaningful employment, and secure housing for themselves and their children.
