Early Life
Bryan Christopher Brooks was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, on February 15, 1969. His parents, Johnnie Williams and Gladys Brooks, took over a month to name him. Bryan used his mother’s surname since Williams did not sign the birth certificate. He has three brothers and sisters: Kim, Ronald, and Ray. Birdman and his family resided in an apartment above his father’s tavern. Birdman’s mother became ill and died in 1975 while he was five years old. Birdman and his siblings lived with their uncle in British Columbia, Canada, for a few years after Gladys died.
When the Brooks children returned to New Orleans, they were placed in foster care for two years. When their father discovered his children were in foster care, he filed a lawsuit to regain custody of them. Birdman moved home with his father, Johnnie, and stepmother, Patricia, after a protracted court struggle in the 1970s. He changed his surname to Williams at this time. Birdman’s father and stepmother resided in New Orleans’ Magnolia Projects. Birdman lived there with his stepbrother Eldrick Wise. The two teenagers robbed people and peddled drugs. They were both arrested at the age of 16. Birdman and Wise were arrested and sentenced to three years in jail when they were 18. Birdman entered the rap business, founding the Big Tymers alongside DJ Mannie Fresh. In 1998, they released their first album, How Ya Luv That?, followed by I Got That Work and Hood Wealthy. B.G. and Juvenile left Cash Money, leaving Birdman to focus on his career. Birdman’s major-label debut, titled Birdman, was released in November 2002.
