Like they say, all things have an end, and all too soon; President Joe Biden’s term in the Oval Office is no exception. His four-year term is now just few hours away from ending.
President Joe Biden delivered his farewell message to the people of America on Wednesday, January 15, highlighting some achievements in his tenure and, of course, the lows. He didn’t stop there; he went on to warn the American people of an emerging oligarch in their country. He warned of a dangerous “Oligarchy” and “extreme wealth” that poses a threat to democracy, rights, and freedom.
The erosion of the free press and the rise of misinformation and disinformation.
The potential dangers of a tech-industrial complex, which he compared to Eisenhower’s warning about the military-industrial complex.
And the need for safeguards in the development of artificial intelligence to protect privacy and rights.
He particularly aimed at wealthy “tech-industrial complex” as incoming president Donald Trump is surrounded by tech giants like Elon Musk who contributed so much to his bid to return to the White House. The likes Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg have made efforts to improve relations with Trump ahead of his return to the White House.
Speaking from the Oval Office President Joe recalled his single-term administration’s record; job creation, infrastructure spending, healthcare, leading the country out of the pandemic, and making the US a safer country.
He, however, added that “it will take time to feel the full impact of all we’ve done together, but the seeds are planted, and they’ll grow and they’ll bloom for decades to come”.
Biden wished Donald Trump’s incoming administration success, but issued a series of warnings that “so much is at stake right now”.
Biden also mentioned the importance of ensuring a peaceful and orderly transition of power to President-elect Donald Trump, while emphasizing the need for Americans to remain vigilant and protect democratic values.
The farewell address comes on the same day he announced a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. The president said the negotiations had been some of the toughest of his career, and took credit for helping get the deal to see the light of day.
The ceasefire deal is expected take effect on 19 January, a day before Trump takes over the oval office. Doanld Trump also took credit for the agreement, saying it was only possible because he won the election in November.
Now reacting to the farewell address, former president Barack Obama took to social media, X to hail Joe Biden’s incredible success as president especially during the pandemic.
His post read; “Four years ago, in the middle of a pandemic, we needed a leader with the character to put politics aside and do what was right. That’s what Joe Biden did. At a time when our economy was reeling, he drove what would become the world’s strongest recovery – with 17 million new jobs, historic wage gains, and lower health care costs.”
Joe Biden has served his term, done his widow’s might, the baton will soon be given to Donald Trump. The world is watching keenly and eagerly for his promise to ‘Make America Great Again’.
