Biden said that the Secret Service has been working on making his primary home in Wilmington, Delaware, safer.
During his Sunday trip to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, President Biden said that he was not on vacation and did not have a house for the time being.
The Associated Press says that after Biden left Mass at St. Edmond Roman Catholic Church, he told reporters that his weekend trip was not a vacation. The president stays in the White House but spends most of his weekends in Delaware, where he has two houses.
Biden told the media, “I have nowhere to go.”
The president said that the U.S. Secret Service has been working on his home in Wilmington, Delaware, for a long time to make it safer “in a good way.” He hasn’t stayed in Wilmington for a night in months.
“So when I come to Delaware, I have nowhere to go but here,” he said, pointing to his home in Rehoboth Beach. “I’m only going to be here for one day.”
Biden first told media about the security changes to his Wilmington home in April, when he returned from a trip to Ireland and went to his beach house.
Saturday morning, the president went to Florida to look at the damage from Hurricane Idalia. That afternoon, he went to the coast of Delaware. He had planned to spend Labor Day weekend at his home in Rehoboth Beach, but he changed his mind after the storm last week.
Two weeks ago, the First Family spent a week on vacation in the Lake Tahoe area of Nevada. The Republican National Committee and GOP leaders on Capitol Hill have attacked Biden’s trips away from the White House on the weekends.
The AP said that the reporters who ran into the president on Sunday asked him if he was trying to say he was homeless.
“No, I’m not homeless,” he said. “I only own one house. My house is very nice. I have to spend the day here because I can’t go home.”
When the reporters asked the White House for more information about what Biden said, they did not get an answer right away.
