He was born to authors William Novak and Linda Novak, who co-edited “The Big Book of Jewish Humor.”. He grew up alongside his two brothers named Jesse Novak, an American composer best known for scoring television shows including The Mindy Project, BoJack Horseman, Tuca & Bertie, The Baby-Sitters Club, Superstore, and Lev Novak.
He attended Newton South High School with future The Office costar John Krasinski, and they graduated in 1997.
